Women's basketball: Hanford High grad Hughes leads Eastern Washington to win

Five Eastern Washington players scored in double figures to lead the Eagles to a 68-53 victory against Montana State on Wednesday in the Big Sky Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Missoula, Mont.

Chiawana graduate Hayley Hodgins had 11 points, while Hanford grad Laura Hughes added 13. Hughes was 6-of-6 from the field.

The Eagles used a 15-0 run early in the second half to go up 49-33. Hodgins hit two 3-pointers during that spurt.

The Bobcats responded with a 7-0 run to make it 49-40, but Hughes answered with three consecutive layups to put the Eagles in control.

The No. 3-seeded Eagles (19-11) will face No. 2 Northern Colorado (19-11) at 10 a.m. Friday in the semifinals.

Sacramento State 73, Idaho State 60: Kylie Kuhns was one of four Hornets (19-11) in double figures in the quarterfinal win over the Bengals (18-12).

Northern Colorado 67, Southern Utah 56: Victoria Timm scored 11 points and had eight assists to lead the Bears (19-11) to the quarterfinal win over the Thunderbirds (15-16).

Western Athletic Conference

Idaho 57, San Jose State 55: Krissy Karr hit a 6-foot jumper as time expired to lift the Vandals (15-15) to a quarterfinal victory over the Spartans (11-19) in Las Vegas.

Seattle 77, New Mexico State 53: Ashley Ward scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Redhawks (19-9) to a quarterfinal victory over the Aggies (15-16).
