March 8, 2013

The Whitman women’s basketball team edged Emory 67-62 on Friday in the NCAA Division III national tournament in Williamstown, Mass., to advance to the Elite 8.

The win puts the Missionaries (23-5) into the regional final at 7 p.m. today against host Williams, which defeated Ithaca 64-60 on Friday.

Whitman took its first lead of the game with 38 seconds left when Southridge High graduate Heather Johns hit two free throws to put her team on top 63-62.

After a missed 3-pointer by Emory, Mary Madden made two more free throws and Sarah Anderegg iced with two of her own.

“I thought our kids did a great job of staying in the game and giving ourselves a chance,” Whitman coach Michelle Ferenz said in a news release. “That has been our character all year.”

Johns, who did not score in the first 20 minutes, finished with 13 points, while Anderegg’s 16 led the Missionaries. She added seven rebounds and two blocks.

This is the first national tournament appearance for the Missionaries.
