Published: March 7, 2013

EUGENE — Heidi Walchli had 20 points for Hermiston to beat Bend 55-46 in the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 5A girls state basketball tournament on Thursday.

It was a rematch of a quarterfinal last season, which Bend won.

Molly Maloney led the fourth-ranked Lava Bears with 11 points.

Hermiston took an early 16-2 lead after Gabby Heehn’s 3-pointer.

But Bend (19-5) chipped away at the lead coming within 32-30 on a free throw from Maloney late in the third quarter.

Walchli answered with a 3-pointer for Hermiston, which held on to the lead for the rest of the way.

The Bulldogs (17-8) advanced to today’s semifinals at Matthew Knight Arena, where they will play top-ranked Springfield (22-3), which defeated Lebanon 71-33 on Thursday in a quarterfinal game.

Mercedes Russell had 29 points for Springfield.

Springfield, which led by as many as 53 points, is looking for a third straight state title.

Cianna Dickey and Molly Aranda had six points apiece to lead eighth-ranked Lebanon (15-9), which had won five straight going into the game.
