Finley Middle School student detained after allegedly writing 'death list'

A Finley Middle School student has been detained by law enforcement for allegedly writing a "death list" containing student and staff names.

The list was found on school grounds Wednesday, according to a press release from the district. The 13-year-old female student who wrote the list, which has about 50 names, was expelled and sent to the Benton County Juvenile Justice Center under suspicion of felony threats.

Superintendent Lance Hahn declined to comment on the incident because it is a police investigation.

However, he said staff responded quickly and professionally and the district's students are safe.

"This is new territory," he said of the situation.

Lt. Chuck Jones of the Benton County Sheriff's Office said the student was picked up by deputies Thursday morning.

School officials also declined to comment about where on school grounds the handwritten list was found or who found it.

Hahn said district records show the student in question does not have a history of problems.

"The student was interviewed and indicated she never had any intention of harming anyone," according to a release from the sheriff's office.

District and law enforcement officials said there is no current danger to anyone at the middle school. School officials are asking students and others to refrain from discussing the incident on social media because of the police investigation.

Hahn said he could not recall a similar incident happening in the district. He has worked there as a teacher, principal and superintendent.

"We've had a lot of phone calls," Hahn said.
