State boys basketball: Richland vs. Central Valley live updates

March 1, 2013

Central Valley 63, Richland 35, Final: The Bombers played better in the fourth quarter, but their season still comes to an end.

Richland was just overpowered today by Central Valley.

Central Valley 48, Richland 21, end of third quarter: This has been a miserable game for Richland. The Bombers can't buy a basket and Central Valley is steadily pulling away.

This is not the end of the season Richland was looking for.

Central Valley 35, Richland 19, halftime: The Bombers just can't get shots to fall.

Part of that is Central Valley's stifling defense and part of that is Richland is missing open shots.

The first half was summed up in both teams' final possessions. Richland tried to create a scoring opportunity and turned the ball over. Central Valley went down, attacked the rim and then kicked out to a wide open AJ Knudsen who drained a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded.

Central Valley 24, Richland 12 with 4:46 left second quarter: The Bombers pulled within 17-12 on a three-point play by Nathan Streufert, but Central Valley quickly goes on a 7-0 run to take a 24-12 lead.

Now Payton Radliff is on the ground writhing in pain and was just called for his third foul.

Everything is going wrong for the Bombers today.

Central Valley 15, Richland 7 end first quarter: The Bombers' Payton Radliff finally made a 3-pointer, but the team's frustrations seem to be boiling over.

Richland coach Earl Streufert was whistled for a technical foul after arguing a call with 1 second left. Central Valley made the ensuing two free throws.

Central Valley 11, Richland 4 with 2:43 left in the first: The Bombers are struggling to score yet again, this time from inside the arc. They've missed two layups and handful of short jumpers.

Central Valley meanwhile is playing extremely well, getting to the basket and passing well out of the collapsing defense.

Pregame: The Richland Bombers boys basketball team was extremely disappointed at how they played in the Class 4A state quarterfinals Thursday and hope to rectify that against Central Valley today.

The two teams have played twice this season with each winning once. Central Valley has only lost three games all year, including a 55-47 loss to Jackson in the quarterfinals. Richland lost 72-60 to Arlington, making just 4-of-24 3-pointers in the game.

The winner of today's game will play Newport of Bellevue at 8 a.m. Saturday for fourth place.
