I agree, in part, with what David Christensen recently wrote in his letter to the editor regarding mental illness and gun control.

Yeah, no kidding. Mental illness and these horrible shootings go hand in hand. Only someone with a mental illness could do such a crime! Why wasn't the shooter in a mental institution? Oh yeah, most of them have closed.

A quick solution to kids bringing guns to school is to install the same scanners they have at airports and court houses in every school. Ask each parent to donate toward the cost. I am pretty sure they would do it in a heart beat.
