Fast focus: What should we do about the farm labor shortage? Old problem

Published: February 17, 2013

What to do about farm labor? I remember this exact same debate when I was going to Central back in 1967, and the question had been going on plenty of years before that. How do you bring in impoverished people to do the work nobody else wants to do, keep it on the cheap with no bennies and get them out of sight when the work is done without anyone being left behind?

I've been paying attention to this dilemma going on 50 years and still there are no politicians brave enough to come up with an equitable solution for all parties concerned. And with the present crazies running around the halls of Congress I suspect there won't be a solution anytime soon. The one thing I don't find particularly appealing is the number of Americans who want to reach out and demonize the laborers as the demons in all of this. Nothing can be further from the truth.
