Game Day: Spokane at Tri-City

February 16, 2013

The Best of the West is done. Sent the page before I headed to the rink. It’s always a time consuming project, but when it’s done, it was worth the effort.

The Tri-City Americans are sprinkled throughout, and all 10 teams in the Western Conference have at least one player in the top six of the categories.

There players honored from 8 countries — United States, Canada, Latvia, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, the Czech Republic and Russia.

Tonight, Troy Trombley is in goal for Tri-City. Trombley stood tall in net (he’s 6-6, how else would he stand) against Portland on Friday, finishing with 41 saves in a 6-2 win. Good enough to pick up another start.

Lee-Knight has the Americans’ other win over the Winterhawks, who lead the season series 6-2.

Portland’s Taylor Peters, who checked Justin Gutierrez into the boards Friday night and was ejected from the game, is facing suspension from the WHL. No length of suspension has been announced. Gutierrez is scratched tonight, leaving the Americans one player shy of 20.

Tonight, the rival Spokane Chiefs are in the house. Spokane leads the 12-game series 5-2-2-0, including a 5-2 victory at Spokane on Feb. 9.

Americans captain Justin Feser is playing his 307th consecutive game tonight. The league record is 311 held by Dwayne Newman. Feser can tie the record Feb. 26 against Portland and set a new record at 312 on March 1 against Seattle. Both games are at Toyota Center.

Spokane coach Son Nachbaur assured me that Alessip Bertaggia is quite the skater. Can hardly wait to see what he brings. He's only played a couple of games for the Chiefs after coming over in a trade with Brandon. He then got hurt and just came back.
