Wrestling: Pasco's Martinez, Kamiakin's Pina win state titles

Pasco sophomore Timmy Martinez wrapped up a 41-0 season Saturday, by bringing home the Class 4A state title at 120 pounds at Mat Classic XXV in the Tacoma Dome.

Martinez dominated Tahoma's Tim Whitehead throughout the match, eventually winning by decision 3-2.

Kamiakin's Sisto Santana Pina also won a state title, capturing the 170-pound Class 3A crown by a 3-1 decision.

Southridge's Kevin Del Angel took second at 195 pounds, losing by decision 7-2 to University's Tanner Orndorff.

Sunnyside also had a 106-pound champ, as Homer Romero won by a 6-4 decision over Stanwood's West Weinert in the Class 3A match. The Grizzlies also had a state title winner at 113 pounds, as Jesse Barajas won in overtime by a 12-10 decision against University's Cam Sorensen.

Othello's Anthony Barrera won the Class 2A state title at 106 pounds, winning by a 6-5 decision over Wapato's Omar Gomez. The Huskies had another state champ in Lucas Garza at 126 pounds. He won by a 5-3 decision in overtime against Deer Park's Jake Konzal.

Othello heavyweight Bubba Ruiz finished second, losing by a 3-2 decision to Fife's Monike Failauga.

In Class 1A, Connell's Roberto Orozco won the 145-pound title, winning 9-4 in overtime. Royal's Alex Myrick won the 170-pound title by a 4-2 decision. Kiona-Benton's Cruz Del Angel won the 182-pound title by an 8-3 decision.

The Bears had another state title at heavyweight, as Cody Zyph rolled to a 15-5 major decision victory.

In Class 2B/1B, Tri-Cities Prep's John Hylden lost his state title match. He was pinned in 1:43.

In the girls tournament, Grandview's Marizza Birrueta won the 100-pound title by a 5-3 decision over Warden's Deianeira Caudle.

Grandview freshman Desiree Zavala brought home the state crown at 124 pounds, winning by decision 2-0 over Othello’s Tatum Sparks.

Othello's Allesha Reyes won the 137-pound title, by a 4-3 decision.



Pasco's Timmy Martinez, Southridge's Kevin Del Angel and Kamiakin's Sisto Santana Pina advanced to state wrestling title matches Saturday in Tacoma at Mat Classic XXV.

Martinez, a sophomore, continued his perfect season with an 8-7 decision over Evergreen's Ramon Ortiz in the semifinals. He will face Tahoma's Tim Whitehead in the final at 5:40 p.m.

Pina knocked off Decatur's Nick Karis by an 8-3 decision in his semifinals match and will face University's Austin Stannard at 8 p.m. today.

Del Angel defeated Wilson's Jake Ferris by a 10-8 decision to advance to the 195-pound title match at 8:40 p.m. He will face University's Tanner Orndorff.

Chiawana's Clayton Smith lost his semifinal match at 145 pounds after being pinned by Lakeside's Eric Soler in 5 minutes, 30 seconds.

Walla Walla's Logan Reardon lost by a 6-4 decision in the 220-pound semifinals.

In Class 3A, Sunnyside's Jesse Barajas won his semifinal match by an 11-6 decision over Decatur's Leviticus Arizpe to reach the finals at 113 pounds.

Kamiakin's Harley Kolp lost his semifinal match by techincal fall 15-0 to Bellevue's Christian Villani. Sunnyside's Daniel Avalos also lost in the semifinals, getting pinned in 1:57 by Glacier Peak's Sean Elledge at 182 pounds.

In Class 2A, Othello's Alec Espinoza advanced to the finals at 113 pounds knocking off Sedro Woolley's Adam Adkinson by a 7-2 decision. Teammate Lucas Garza also advanced to a final, taking down CWAC rival Teven Martinez of Toppenish by a 9-1 major decision at 126 pounds.

Heavyweight Bubba Ruiz went to triple overtime to advance to the finals for Othello.

Ruiz won by decision 6-4 over Centralia's Alex Daarud.

Othello's Anthony Barrera also reached the finals at 106 pounds, winning by injury default against his brother Isaiah Barrera.

In Class 1A, Connell's Roberto Orozco advanced to the finals at 145 pounds thanks to a pin of Quincy's Isias Jimenez in 4:51.

Royal's Alex Myrick also advanced, cruising to a 15-0 technical fall over Goldendale's Kyle Wilkins at 170 pounds.

Kiona-Benton's Cruz Del Angel will face Mt. Baker's Tyrel Cronk in the 182-pound finals tonight. Del Angel won by pin over Freeman's Markus Goldbach in 1:49.

The Bears also have a finalist at 285 pounds, as Cody Zyph advanced thanks to a 7-4 decision over Blaine's Mike Antczak.

Mabton's Vicente Mireles lost his semifinal match by a 9-7 decision at 132 pounds to Stevenson's Tyler Miller.

Kiona-Benton's Kale Setzer also lost in the semifinals, as Medical Lake's Anton King pinned the Benton City senior in 3:00 at 138 pounds.

In the girls tournament, Grandview's Marizza Birrueta pinned Kendra Smith of Rogers (Puyallup) in 3 minutes, 10 seconds to reach the final at 100 pounds.

Othello's Tatum Sparks rolled into the championship match at 124 pounds and will face a familiar foe in Grandview's Desiree Zavala.

Sparks won by technical fall 19-0 over Tunwater's Megan Johnson, while Zavala won by technical fall 19-2 over Mt. Baker's Jessica Mata.

Othello's Allesha Reyes also advanced to the finals, winning by pin in 4:28 against Lakeside's Juliana Trujillo at 137 pounds.

Mabton's Mary Gutierrez and Grandview's Viannei Perez both lost in the 112-pound semifinals and will wrestle each other for third place.

Sunnyside's Jessica Cardenas lost in the 170-pound semifinals, falling to White River's Samantha Mitchell by pin in 4:27. Teammate Abigail Elizondo also lost in the semifinals, falling 7-3 by decision to Kelso's Mariah Horton.
