Girls basketball: Kennewick shocks top-seed Mt. Spokane

February 12, 2013

Midway through the regular season, the Kennewick girls basketball team was 2-8. Ten days ago the Lions were 6-12.

Today they are sitting pretty and riding high on the jubilation from Tuesday night’s 61-50 upset of host Mt. Spokane in the Class 3A District 5/8 Tournament.

“We played really good defense,” coach Oliver Browning said after his club improved to 9-12 and eded the season for the Wildcats (12-9). “We rebounded really well, we were able to knock down some key 3s early and get a lead, and they were never able to make up some ground on us.”

Sophomore guard Taylor Osmundson found her shooting touch to lead Kennewick with 16 points, and Ashely Kump scored 15.

“She really came on tonight, shot with a lot of confidence and played her best game,” Browning said of Osmundson. “Her and Ashley Kump played their best games of the year.”

Panisesi Taimani turned in her usual big game with 12 points and 18 rebounds against a bigger Mt. Spokane team.

“Holding them to one shot on every possession was key for us,” Browning said.
