Riverhawks place second in 4A regional

TRI-CITY HERALDFebruary 10, 2013

Wrestling against the likes of Moses Lake and Mead, you have to pick your battles and count your victories where you can.

The Chiawana Riverhawks may not have brought home the team title from Saturday's Class 4A Eastern Washington regional tournament at Central Valley High in Spokane. But finishing second and 26 points behind Moses Lake is nothing to hang a head about, and locking up eight state berths is plenty reason to smile.

Chiawana, Pasco and Richland all had reason to celebrate, with each team landing a regional champ and top seed to next week's Mat Classic state tournament at the Tacoma Dome.

Riverhawks senior Clayton Smith won the title at 145 pounds, picking off Mead state placer David Munding 7-5.

Pasco sophomore Timmy Martinez remained unbeaten (38-0) after dominating the 120-pound bracket. After a first-period pin and a 15-0 technical fall, he rolled over Davis senior Juan Lopez 7-0 in the final.

Richland junior Pryce Seely claimed the crown at 138 against a familiar foe, Chiawana junior Jadin Salazar. Seely took a major decision 11-3, following up his overtime win over Salazar at districts last week.

The Riverhawks had two more runner-up finishers, seniors Austen Silvers at 182 and Martin Villanueva at 285. They'll be joined at state by senior teammate Boss Garcia (third 152), senior Chris Montelongo (fourth 113), senior Jordan Vaughn (fourth 195) and senior Abzael Loeza (fourth) 220.

Three more Chiawana wrestlers finished fifth and will go to state as alternates: senior Pedro Murillo at 120, junior Blake Bishop at 160 and freshman Levi McBride at 285.

Pasco finished seventh in the team race (65 1/2 points) despite bringing just six wrestlers. Two of those will join Martinez on the state mats: senior Brandon Gonzalez finished second at 126 and senior Jackson Fromm was a runner-up at 152. Also, sophomore Bobby Guzman placed fifth at 106.

"Jackson Fromm and Gonzalez wrestled their butts off," said Pasco coach Jay Covington. "As the tournaments get tougher, our kids start to shine. ... I'm happy with the way we wrestled today."

Richland's state contingent includes seniors Noah Workman (fourth at 132) and Cam Simpson (fourth at 170).

Walla Walla has one locked-in berth with Logan Reardon, who placed third at 220. Also, Zane Henderson is an alternate at 170.

Team scores: Moses Lake 182, Mead 156, Chiawana 155, Central Valley 136, Wenatchee 112, Eastmont 87, Pasco 62.5, Lewis & Clark 64, Richland 52.5, DAvis 48, Walla Walla 33, Eisenhower 20, Ferris 17, Gonzaga 4.
