Kelso High Schools Gaither Pool is a good 260 miles from Richland, but the Hanford high school boys swam like it was their home Saturday at the District 4/5 Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Falcons rolled up 396 team points while earning 14 state qualifying spots, and came away with five individual champions plus a win in the 200-yard medley relay. The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
William Werz broke a 14-year-old pool record in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 47.15 seconds to eclipse his time of 48.54 in Fridays qualifying event. Werz also captured the 200 freestyle in 1:44.97, beating runnerup Nicholas McMillan (1:51.64) of Columbia River by over 6 1/2 seconds.
Jake Douglas also won two events, taking the 100 fly (54.84) and 500 free (5:04.36). He and Werz also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay squad.
It was pretty impressive to go over there and dominate that field, Hanford coach Kathy Piper said. In the breastroke we got 1-2-3. All the way around, the kids swam really good today.
