Hanford’s Jake Douglas and Andrew Peacock earned Class 3A state-qualifying times, and Will Wertz kept his top seed in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle on the first day of the District 4/5 Boys High School Swimming and Diving Championships at Kelso High School.

After leaving for Kelso at 7:30 a.m. Friday, the Falcons got to their hotel at 1 p.m. and swam three hours later. They put at least one person or relay team in every A final today.

“Everybody made it through and swam pretty smart,” Hanford coach Kathy Piper said. “We got quite a bundle in the top six.”

Douglas won the day in the 100 butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 54.47 seconds, while Peacock was first in the preliminaries of the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 3.31 seconds.

Wertz lowered his state-qualifying time in the 100 free, finishing in 48.54. In the 200 free, his time of 1:48.34 was almost three seconds ahead of runner-up Nicholas McMillan of Columbia River.

Four Hanford swimmers placed in the top six of the 500 free, and three Falcons advanced to the championship finals of the 200 individual medley, 200 free, 100 fly and 100 breast.

Sunnyside junior Alex Perez will swim today in consolation finals after finishing eighth in the 100 free (54.87) and ninth in the 100 breast (1:12.55).
