WRESTLING: Othello runs away with CWAC district title

Alec Espinoza (113 pounds), Lucas Garza (126), Jesus Montes (160), Derek Gilbert (220) and Bubba Ruiz (285) all won titles for Othello at the CWAC district wrestling tournament Saturday night, and the Huskies once again ran away with the team title at West Valley High in Yakima.

Garza topped Grandview’s David Castaneda 5-3 in the 126 final. The Greyhounds took the other matchup between the two schools, with Fidel Medina topping Anthony Barrera 3-1 in overtime.

Grandview’s Joesiah Saunders pinned teammate Stevie Rodriguez for the crown at 132, and Jaron Raymond finished second at 138 as the Greyhounds placed fifth.

The top seven at each weight advance to next week’s regional against the Great Northern League in Ellensburg. Othello is sending 16 wrestlers, Grandview eight and Prosser six.

SCAC EAST SUB-REGIONAL: Host Warden took the team title and had two individuals — Jesus Dominguez at 106 pounds and Adam Hansen at 220 — at the SCAC East sub-regional Saturday.

Warden will send 11 wrestlers to regionals next weekend in Connell, while second-place Kiona-Benton will send 12.

The Bears also had four individual champs: David Graham at 120, Kale Setzer at 138, Cruz Del Angel at 182, and Cody Zyph at 285.

District girls: Pasco’s Tania Martinez won the title at 155 to lead the Bulldogs to first place in the team race.

With the top four wrestlers at each weight advancing to regionals next weekend at Connell, Pasco pushed along eight wrestlers, including runners-up Sydney Virgen (130) and Katelyn Jensen (137).

Richland’s Tamika Pierce finished first at 106. Grandview finished with three champs: Marizza Birrueta (100), Viannei Perez (112) and Desiree Zavala (124).

Sunnyside’s Abigail Elizoneo won at 130 and Jessica Cardenas at 170, and Royal’s Breanne Diaz topped the bracket at 118.
