Girls basketball: Vickerman sparks Connell past Kiona-Benton

January 26, 2013

With Kiona-Benton packing in its defense, the Connell girls basketball team needed a spark.

And Brittany Vickerman was the one to provide it.

Vickerman hit four 3-pointers, including three in the third quarter as Connell rallied for a 66-48 victory Saturday against the visiting Bears in an SCAC East game.

“That was huge off the bench. A huge lift for us,” Connell coach Kameron Jenks said. “We’ve been struggling with our outside shooting. Teams are starting to pack it in against us, so we have to shoot the ball from the outside.”

Kiona-Benton was playing a box-and-one against Kody Easterday and a triangle-and-two against Easterday and MarciAnne Hawkins, which caused the Eagles to struggle offensively.

The Bears led 23-17 at halftime, but the Vickerman got the Eagles going and Connell outscored the visitors 49-27 in the second half.
