Boys basketball: Briones' big night leads Chiawana upset

Jesse Briones had his best game of the season and it came at the perfect time.

The guard had 10 points, five rebounds, seven assists and five steals to lead host Chiawana to a 58-52 victory over Hanford as the Mid-Columbia Conference hit the halfway point Friday.

“We came out in the first quarter and I thought we really set the tempo defensively,” Chiawana coach Chad Herron said. “It definitely gave us the momentum and we played our best game of the year.

“Jesse did a lot of everything for us and made a lot of winning plays.”

Joe Douglas had 27 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for the Falcons in the loss.

Pasco 65, Kennewick 60: DeDrain Miller scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs to a Mid-Columbia Conference road victory over the Lions.

Julian Figueroa added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Pasco, which earned its second league win of the season.

Mitchel Muller’s 17 points led Kennewick.

Richland 69, Southridge 54: Nathan Streufert had 28 points and 18 rebounds in a home victory for the Bombers, who prevailed over the Suns despite shooting a season-low 34.4 percent (21-for-61) from the field.

“We missed a lot of open shots,” Richland coach Earl Streufert said. “Southridge was real disciplined offensively. They got good shots and hung around. We finally took advantage of throwing the ball inside and shooting a lot of free throws late.”

The Bombers held a four-point lead entering the fourth quarter and then outscored the Suns 27-16. Nathan Streufert scored nine points in the final period, and the Bombers went 11-for-14 from the line.

Austin Molt led Southridge with 16 points, and David Mazzei had 12.

Kiona-Benton 39, Columbia (Burbank) 33: The Bears used a big second half to erase a 26-15 halftime deficit to pick up the SCAC East road victory.

Kiona-Benton outscored Columbia 24-7 in the second half.

“We just had a lot of open looks and we just couldn’t get anything to go down,” Columbia coach Todd Schumacher said. “Obviously the shots were the key. We were feeling it in the first half.”
