Timmy Martinez posted three pins and a 16-5 victory in the finals at 126 pounds to earn the outstanding wrestler award at the Bonney Lake tournament and lead Pasco to a fifth-place showing Saturday.
Im real proud of em, Bulldogs coach Jay Covington said of his young team. We wrestled with a lot of heart, and finishing fifth out of 20 teams is real good. Brandon Gonzales finished second at 132 pounds, losing 5-2 in the finals to Tahomas Gabe Boynay, who placed fourth at state last year.
Jackson Fromm placed third at 152 after losing 9-4 in the semifinals to state placer Matt Yuste of Bonney Lake.
Luis Velasco finished sixth at 160 for the Bulldogs, Patrick Torres seventh at 113, James Debosz seventh at 182 and Dalton McDonald eighth at 138. Were green, Covington said, but even the green kids everybody was winning matches, at least one.
Pacific Northwest Classic: Othellos Anthony Barrera was the only area wrestler to come away with an individual title, but two runner-up finishes and two more third-place showings helped pace Chiawana to third place at the Spokane tournament.
Barrera topped state placer Kwest Osborn of University 4-3 in the final at 106, one of several big showings for the 2A Huskies who finished sixth in a field of Class 3A and 4A schools plus a couple powerhouse small schools.
Lucas Garza lost 6-2 in the final at 126 to Deer Parks Jake Konzal, a two-time state champion. Also, Eric Garza was second at 152, losing 7-1 to North Centrals Izaec Quintanilla, also a state placer.
Chiawana got second-place showings from Chris Montelongo at 120 (4-2 overtime loss to Lakesides Hootie Judd, a 1A state placer) and Martin Villanueva at 285 (pinned by Shadle Parks Alex Van Vlymen). Also, Boss Garcia was third at 152, Abzael Loeza third at 220 and Bryce Buckley fourth at 113 for the Riverhawks.
Garcia lost 10-5 to Eric Garza in the semifinals, while Loeza edged Hanfords Dallon Grinder in the third-fourth match. But coach Jack Anderson was all smiles over Villanuevas finish.
It was the first ever finals match he participated in, Anderson said. He was really excited, and we were excited for him.
We did pretty well. Im excited about our efforts this weekend.
The Falcons had a runner-up at 182 when Will Bishop was pinned by Glacier Highs Dawson Day.
Southridges Kevin Del-Angel looked headed to another tourney title until U-His Tanner Orndorff turned the tables with a 58-second pin in the 195 final. Bryce Overholt placed fourth at 182 for the Suns.
Cameron Simpson gave Richland a strong showing by finishing third at 170. He lost 6-5 to eventual champ Austin Stannard of U-Hi in the semifinals before finishing up in style with a pin and 16-3 major decision.
