Published: December 24, 2012

— An 83-year-old woman fell into a 35-foot backyard well in the 400 block of West Locust Street in Waterville, spending about 20 minutes in cold water before she was rescued. Waterville is north of Wenatchee.

Firefighters and EMS responders were summoned to the home about 8:55 a.m., and found the woman close to unconsciousness in water too deep to set foot on the bottom.

Six firefighters from Douglas Fire District No. 1 responded to help pull the woman from the well. She was extracted by 9:15 a.m. and transported by ambulance to Central Washington Hospital.

Her condition was not known this morning.
