Some 1,000 Mid-Columbia children will find bicycles under the Christmas tree this year, thanks to Hanford vitrification plant employees and Local 598 pipefitters.

The Marine Corps Reserves accepted the donation for its Toys for Tots campaign Thursday at the vitrification plant construction site. In addition to the 1,000 bicycles, toys and nearly $20,000 in cash were donated.

"The efforts of the vit plant employees are a huge part of the local Toys for Tots program and help us meet the rising demands each year," said Glen Carter, Toys for Tots coordinator, in a statement.

Department of Energy contractors Bechtel National and URS contributed to the cash donation. Several senior managers attended the event dressed as Santa and his elves, a pledge they made to honor generous employee donations.

Griggs/Ace Hardware ensured the bike orders were fulfilled in time for Christmas delivery and Vintners Logistics will deliver the toys and bikes.
