Chiawana pounds Southridge in Mid-Col dual

December 12, 2012

Chiawana won 11 of 14 matches Wednesday night to beat Southridge 53-15 in a Mid-Col wrestling match at Chiawana High School.

“We have a great group of kids who have worked extremely hard the last three years and now they are seniors,” said Chiawana coach Jack Anderson, whose starting lineup features seven seniors. “Their hard work is starting to pay off.”

Southridge’s Lydon reams pinned the Riverhawks’ Joel Murrillo in the third round at 138 pounds to open the match, and Jeremy Nelson followed with a 5-4 decision over Jadin Salazar at 145 to take a 9-0 lead.

But it would be all Chiawana from there.

Clayton Smith (152), Boss Garcia (16), Blake Bishop (170) and Austen Silvers (182) won consecutive matches to put the Riverhawks out front 20-9.

Southridge’s Kevin Del Angel made quick work of Bernardo Castillo at 195, registering a first-round pin, but those would be the last points for the Suns.

“Del Angel looked phenomenal,” Anderson said. “He has a great season ahead of him.”

The Riverhawks closed out the match with seven wins, including a pin at 136 by Pedro Murrillo over Eli Romero.
