The Kamiakin Braves learned a couple valuable lessons in their 51-44 win over visiting University on Saturday.
First, if you are not ready to go from opening tip, things can get out of hand in a hurry, evidenced by the Titans’ 29-11 edge at the half.
Second, when defense is a team’s forte, rarely is it out of a game, even trailing by 18 to one of the traditional powers from Spokane.
“It was bizarre,” said Kamiakin coach Lane Schumacher. “We were down 29-11 at the half, we shot a couple 3-point air balls, we were turning it over. Then all of a sudden they took the lid of the basket in the second half and played a little defense.
“Talk about a tale of two halves.”
Courtney Nelson, in foul trouble in the first half, finished with 24 points to lead the Braves. Sira Toure added 17, and Amanda Miller chipped in three points and eight boards.
“We were in trouble,” Schumacher said. “But then we turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, started getting some steals, some easy baskets again. It opened up the offense and made a huge, huge difference.”
