Wrestling: Thursday, Dec. 6

TRI-CITY HERALDDecember 7, 2012

The Richland Bombers waited until the last possible moment to start their rally Thursday night, but it wrapped just in time for a win in their Mid-Columbia Conference wrestling opener.

Kevin Garza, Skyler Mitchell and Edwin Gastalum won by pins and, sandwiched with a forfeit, gave Richland a 24-point closing push as the Bombers topped the visiting Kamiakin Braves 39-34.

Garza started a four-match tear at 152 pounds after the Braves jumped out 21-0 with pins from defending state champion Sisto Santana Pina (195), Nick Little (220) and Tyler Almaguer (106).

Dustin Ralston's pin at 113 gave Richland a temporary reprieve, but Kamiakin won the next two matches for a 28-6 lead. But the Bombers won six of the final seven matches.

The Braves took one hit in particular during that run as state placer Harley Kolp at 138 injured his knee during warm-ups and couldn't wrestle.

Among the close matches were Blake Bishop's 10-7 win over Michael Etherton at 170 for Chiawana, and Michael Hosfield's 6-4 overtime win over Laiten Schroeder at 132 for the Lions.

"We showed a lot of fight," said Kennewick coach Dwane Sitler. "Our kids are just behind Chiawana. They wrestle a lot, and our kids are playing catch-up with guys like those.

"But that's where we want to get."
