WALLA WALLA -- Two 13-year-old students at Pioneer Middle School in Walla Walla were arrested Thursday after marijuana was found in their lockers.

One student had a small unspecified amount of marijuana found in his locker by the school's resource officer, according to a press release from the Walla Walla Police Department. He was taken to the Walla Walla County Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of possession of marijuana.

However, it was the smell of marijuana coming from another student's locker that led to another search. In that student's locker, the officer found a large unspecified amount of marijuana in a plastic bag, along with three smaller baggies containing marijuana and some empty bags.

Marijuana was also found in the second students' pockets. He was taken to the juvenile justice center under suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

Initiative 502, approved by voters in November, went into effect in Washington on Thursday.

The initiative decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana under state law by people 21 and older. However, it is still illegal to have in public spaces, including schools and universities.
