1981: In one of the most thrilling championship games in state history, Richland's Mark Schwisow took a short pass from Mark Bircher and broke off an 81-yard score with 2:42 left in the game, lifting the Bombers to a 7-6 win over Kentridge in the Class AAA state championship at the Kingbowl. Tim Ruane's extra point proved the margin of victory, and Kyle Kafentzis' ensuing interception put the game away. "We finally did it," coach J.D. Covington said, a year after his team lost 28-26 in the semifinals. "It was a great team win."

1947: Jim Johnson and Joe Wilson Jr., who earlier in the week issued a challenge to all comers, topped Len Shields and Pee-Wee Wilson by 50 pins in a doubles bowling match, 1,625-1,575. Johnson posted the high score, averaging a 179 over five games. As the newspaper noted: "... it is understood that they are still confident that they can take any other doubles in a similar match. Challengers are urged to take them on before they think they are too good."
