Bechtel National called a stand down at the Hanford vitrification plant construction site Thursday to focus on safety.

It was called at noon after an injury at the construction site in morning, and it will continue through the weekend. Although the injury was minor, it was the third injury in the past month.

First, an employee strained a shoulder while handling scaffolding. Next, a worker driving a mobile lift struck a piece of equipment that then hit another employee, injuring his leg.

On Thursday, an employee rolled a hand-operated pallet jack over his foot.

During the stand down, employees attended small group meetings to discuss the events and actions to prevent recurrences.

"Safety is always more important that meeting a schedule," Frank Russo, Bechtel National project director, said in a memo to employees.
