Man arrested in attempted rape in Walla Walla

Published: November 12, 2012

— A man was arrested on investigation of attempted rape after police responded to a report of an assault Sunday night.

According to Officer Tim Bennett, police spokesman, when officers arrived on West Chestnut Street at about 10:20 p.m. on Sunday, Brendan F. Nichols, 34, attempted to flee the scene on foot. Officers used a Taser on the 6-foot, 280-pound naked man with little success.

“He continued to fight after he was tased,” Bennett said, adding Nichols struck an officer on the head, and attempted to put an officer in a head lock.

Bennett said officers finally subdued Nichols with a lateral vascular neck restraint, rendering him briefly unconscious. Bennett said Nichols appeared to be intoxicated, and was transported to a medical facility for examination, where Nichols continued to make death threats against police officers.

According to Bennett, in a later interview, Nichols admitted using marijuana and cocaine. Nichols was lodged at the Walla Walla County Jail on investigation of attempted second-degree rape, third-degree assault, felony harassment and fourth-degree assault.
