Blue bridge to reopen this morning, official says

Published: November 7, 2012

Traffic was expected to be back to normal over the blue bridge this morning.

Moe Davari, project engineer with the Washington Department of Transportation, told the Herald on Tuesday night that the bridge would "definitely" be opened before 5 a.m. today.

Contractors finally got the last expansion joint installed on the bridge and were expected to pour the concrete around it at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Davari said.

The concrete needed about four hours to set before it was strong enough for traffic to drive over.

The northbound lanes of Highway 395 over the blue bridge have been closed since 10 p.m. Thursday. Work was expected to be completed to get the bridge reopened by Monday morning.

Crews are replacing 28-year-old expansion joints. The new joints didn't fit perfectly in the spot when the old joints were removed, causing extra work and issues for the contractor.

The southbound lanes are scheduled to be closed Thursday night through Monday morning to replace the expansion joints.

Davari said he will be meeting with the contractor Wednesday to verify the plan.
