Three Sleep City stores in the Tri-Cities are being transformed into two Mattress Discounters and a Sleep Country USA.
Sleep City of Montana recently sold its Tri-City stores to Mattress Discounters and Sleep Country USA, two sister companies.
Sleep City was approached with an offer that it couldn't refuse, said Jason Zachariasen, Sleep City's vice president of sales.
Sleep City remains open online and at its five stores in Montana, he said.
The former Sleep City stores in Richland, at 1350 Tapteal Drive and 37 Columbia Point Drive, will reopen as Mattress Discounters, hopefully on Nov. 7, said Mike Estes, regional vice president for Mattress Discounters.
The former Sleep City Pasco store at 4525 N. Road 68 will reopen as a Sleep Country store on the same date, Estes said.
This represents an expansion of Sleep Country's presence in the Tri-Cities. Sleep Country opened one Richland and two Kennewick stores last year when the company bought all 14 Mattress Outlet stores.
The two Mattress Discounters will be the first in the Tri-Cities, which Estes said is a new market for the company.
Mattress Discounters is a streamlined, "frills-free environment," he said.
"It's for a bargain shopper," Estes said.
Customers will receive a 60-night comfort guarantee compared to Sleep Country's 100-night comfort guarantee, Estes said.
And Mattress Discounters doesn't have Sleep Country's Foster Kid program, where the company holds drives for foster children, collecting items such as school supplies, pajamas, coats and toys.
Sleep City employees have been offered jobs with Mattress Discounters and Sleep Country, Estes said.
Sleep City stores in Spokane, Yakima and Coeur d'Alene also were sold to Mattress Discounters and Sleep Country USA. The two sister companies are owned by their employees and founder Dale Carlsen.
In the meantime, Sleep City is following up on all open orders, Zachariasen said.
Sleep City employees contacted customers who had open orders earlier this week and are closely tracking those orders, he said.
Home Direct, a company that works with Sleep City's major vendors, will deliver mattresses to customers' homes directly from manufacturer warehouses, Zachariasen said. The delivery will take longer than Sleep City's normal delivery.
The 100-night comfort guarantee still is being honored by the company that bought Sleep City's stores, Zachariasen said.
Washington residents can buy Sleep City mattresses online, he said. Those will also be delivered by Home Direct.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, according to a news release.
