Great Gear: Dakine winter hat balances style, function

By Shelby Sheehan-Bernard, McClatchy-TribuneNovember 1, 2012

Whether you're on the slopes or just running errands, solid headgear is a must for the winter months.

But finding the perfect hat that's warm and stylish can be a challenge.

Opt for the all-out protection of an earflap hat and risk looking like Elmer Fudd, or get frostbitten trying to look great in some trendy beret.

Or you could find something that strikes a perfect balance, such as Dakine's Vine Hat, which offers the style of a hand-knit hat with a special sewn-in band that beats the most frigid cold temperatures.

The Vine Hat has a beanie-style design with a cable knit that flatters many face shapes. It's simple without being plain, allowing many years of wear without going out of style. More important, though, is its ability to keep you warm. Its outer layer is made from 50 percent wool for cold-weather protection and 50 percent acrylic to eliminate any itchiness. The sewn-in fleece liner is made from 100 percent polyester that's soft and self-insulating.

Dakine's Vine Hat is available in five colors: black, purple, red, brown and white. Its price is $30.
