Soccer roundup: Hanford sheds Shadle Park in regionals

Monica Rowley knocked in the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute to help the host Hanford Falcons beat the Shadle Park Highlanders 2-1 on Tuesday in a Class 3A regional girls soccer elimination game.

After Shadle Park got on the board first in the eighth minute, Hanford wasn't down for long. Sydney Shintaffer tied the score in the 13th minute.

Hanford will face another win-or-go-home situation Thursday night, when it hosts familiar foe Southridge. The Falcons have two victories on the Suns this season.

"It's hard to beat a team three times," Hanford assistant coach Glen Ledgerwood said. "They're a well-coached team with dangerous players, but we definitely feel we have a good chance to win."

Kamiakin 5, North Central 0: Sarah Burns and Lexi McQueary each scored in the first seven minutes as the host Braves jumped out quick and never looked back.

Five different players scored for Kamiakin (15-1-1), which advances to the regional title game at Mt. Spokane at 3 p.m. Thursday.

"We played pretty good," said Braves coach Chris Erikson.

Mercedes Haberling stopped seven shots for Southridge, which will move on to face Hanford on Thursday.

Mead 3, Pasco 2: Abby Buckenberger and Megan Zimmerman scored twice in the last 10 minutes to pull to within 3-2, but the Bulldogs fell to the Panthers in a loser-out 4A regional contest at Edgar Brown Stadium.

Mead outshot Pasco 24-5, getting second-half goals from Kathryn Imming, Kara Marbury and Martha Heaps.

The Panthers will play at Richland at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bomber Field for the No. 2 seed to state.

Mt. Spokane will play host to Kamiakin at 3 p.m. Thursday for the 3A regional championship.

EPHRATA 3, PROSSER 1: Lindsay Yetter scored in the 66th minute, but the host Mustangs weren't able to catch up with the Tigers in a Class 2A District 5/6/7 consolation semifinal.

Prosser will visit Pullman, the No. 1 seed out of the Great Northern League, on Saturday. The winner will take the District 5/6/7 No. 2 seed to state, and the loser will head home.

La Salle 8, Connell 3: The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on Jessica Garcia's unassisted goal, but the Lightning scored eight unanswered goals to pull away for the SCAC district win in Yakima.

Garcia finished with two goals and an assist, but La Salle outshot Connell 30-16.

The Eagles will play Highland at 4 p.m. Thursday in Royal City to decide the No. 3 seed to the Class 1A state tournament.
