Playing on an emotional day, the Prosser girls soccer team rallied past East Valley for a 2-1 victory in the first round of the Class 2A District 5/6/7 tournament.
Thursday was the first time the Mustangs played a match since freshman Alejandra Alex Islas died in a car accident Saturday. The head-on crash also killed her mother, Ilda L. Islas, 44. Their funeral also was Thursday.
It was pretty emotional, Prosser assistant coach Ricky Ruiz said. Especially being down 1-0. The girls kept it together and fought through the emotions. They had a lot to play for. What a roller coaster.
East Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a goal by Salome Yates in the elimination game.
But the Mustangs fought back, as Kaitlyn Maddox tied the score in the 25th minute. Matti Boyle scored in the 60th minute to extend Prossers season and send the Mustangs into a match at 1 p.m. Saturday at Selah in a quarterfinal matchup.
