Appellation: Washington
Bainbridge Island winemaker Matt Albee turned Syrah from Alder Creek Vineyard in the Horse Heavens into a fortified wine so delectable that he named after his wife. Fresh-picked plums, Whopper malted milk balls and Jolly Rancher grape candy aromas are matched on the palate, where flavors of cordial cherry are added to the mix. The winemaker did a remarkable job of controlling the alcohol, presenting it as a ruby-style port with its youthful approach. And the acidity makes the residual sugar (9 percent) come off as pleasing, not cloying. Rated "Outstanding" by Wine Press Northwest magazine. (14.63 percent alcohol)
Price: $19.
Cases produced: 150.
Food matches: This is a delicious sipper on a cold autumn evening or an after-dinner dessert wine with a blue cheeses, nuts and grapes.
