Girls soccer: Chiawana's Miller scores, defense holds off Hanford

October 13, 2012

Lexi Miller got free for a moment, and that was all she needed.

The Chiawana senior hammered home a goal from 25-yards out Saturday to lead the Riverhawks to a 1-0 Mid-Columbia Conference victory at Chiawana.

“Braydey (Hodgins) passed her the ball from the flank, and they didn’t step to cover,” Chaiwana coach Rich Zoller said. “She took a shot from 25 yards out, and it went into the upper left-hand corner of the goal. A beautiful goal.”

That was in the 55th minute, and from there, the Chiawana defense was up to the task.

Scoring—1, Chiawana, Lexi Miller (Braydey Hodgins), 55:00. Shots—Hanford 4, Chiawana 11. Saves—Hanford, Emily Busselman, 1; Chiawana, Cydni Cottrell, 3 Pasco 2, Southridge 0: Too many times this season the Bulldogs had been on the wrong side of low-scoring games, but that changed Saturday.

Megan Zimmerman scored in the 49th and Abby Buckenberger in the 70th as Pasco knocked off host Southridge.

“We’ve lost four or five one-goal games this season,” Pasco coach Justin Carey said. “We’ve been on the wrong side of a lot of close games, so it is good to be on the right side for once.”

Kamiakin 1, Walla Walla 0: Rachel Young scored in the sixth minute on an assist from Rachel Ensign and then the Braves’ defense made it stand up.

The victory guarantees at least a tie for the league title for Kamiakin, which holds a two-game lead on Chiawana and Richland.
