Volleyball: Kamiakin takes 9th at Crossover Classic in Spokane

The Kamiakin Braves won their first four matches Saturday at the Crossover Classic in Spokane, finishing first in pool play and landing in the platinum bracket. They lost their final three matches, however, to finish ninth.

“We execute better when we’re relaxed. We were having fun, enjoying our day,” said Braves coach Mary Opitz. “Lakeside was a really good match for us, even though we lost. I’m pleased with how hard we played.”

Mead won the tournament, defeating Jackson (Mill Creek) 25-20, 29-27.

Chiawana was third in the gold bracket, rebounding from a semifinal loss to Central Valley to beat Bishop Blanchet 25-23. Jaymee Steach finished with 108 assists on the day, and Shantelle Hill had 36 kills and 30 digs.

Kennewick placed fifth in the gold bracket, winning its final three matches.

STANFIELD LOSES PAIR: Vanessa Herrera had 43 digs on the day, but the host Tigers were swept by Blue Mountain Conference rivals Union and Weston-McEwen. Kourtney Watson and Megan Bailey each had 21 digs against Union, while Alisen Measham recorded 15 assists. Bailey finished with 12 digs and five kills against Weston-McEwen.
