DOE fines Battelle for Idaho Falls violations

Published: October 6, 2012

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- The U.S. Department of Energy has fined Battelle Energy Alliance $412,500 for violations that took place at the Idaho National Laboratory.

The DOE notified Battelle of the penalty Thursday in a letter to lab director John Grossenbacher. Battelle is the company contracted to run the research and lab facilities at INL in Idaho Falls and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.

The DOE cited violations of quality assurance requirements and occupational radiation protection.

Lab spokesman Ethan Huffman told the Idaho Falls Post there is no plan to appeal the decision. Huffman also said the fine will be paid with Battelle corporate funds, not taxpayer dollars.
