KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Overturf Motors of Kennewick is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month with hopes of growing the business into a third-generation dealership.
"It's an accomplishment for a local business to last 50 years, and not only to last but to prosper and grow," said Doug Overturf.
His parents, Jim and Marian Overturf, moved the Volkswagen dealership to Kennewick from The Dalles, Ore., in 1962. They opened at the corner of Columbia Drive and Benton Street in Kennewick.
In 1974, the Overturfs expanded the dealership and added Audi to the family portfolio. They began to offer the South Korean KIA lineup in 1996.
As the business and inventory expanded, a new home for the dealership was needed, so in 1987, Overturf Motors moved to its current showroom at 1016 W. Columbia Drive.
Doug Overturf now runs the dealership. He began working at Overturf at the age of 14.
He took over the sales management department after graduating from Eastern Washington University with a degree in businees. He bought the company in 1992.
He hopes his daughter, Jennifer Bronner, will be interested in guiding the company through the next 50 years.
Overturf will be using the month of October to celebrate.
