Volleyball: Chiawana knocks off Kamiakin in four

The serving of Alex Johnson and Whitney Wheat helped lead Chiawana to a four-set road victory Thursday against Kamiakin in Mid-Columbia Conference play.

Wheat served the final three points to close out the match, as the Riverhawks rallied from 23-19 and 24-22 deficits in the fourth set.

Johnson served seven consecutive points in the third set to lead Chiawana out of a 17-14 hole.

“It was a good, kind of character win,” Chiawana head coach Jim Steach said. “We’re still trying to figure out what it means to compete.” Amanda Miller was 15-of-16 serving with three aces, 10 kills and 17 digs to lead the Braves.

“We’ve taken them to five games before over at their place, and I thought we could compete,” Kamiakin coach Mary Opitz said. “We had moments where we did well and moments where we didn’t. You have to be more consistent against a team like that.”

Kennewick 3, Hanford 1: Kelly Dyer’s 14 digs and five aces led a strong effort by the visiting Lions in a Mid-Columbia victory over the Falcons. Tori Smith had six kills and 10 blocks to lead Hanford.

Southridge 3, Walla Walla 1: Kylie Fraga battled through illness to finish with 35 assists and 11 digs, and Kimberly Brinkworth had 14 kills, 10 digs and five blocks to help the Suns improve to 6-2 in league with a home win over the Blue Devils.

Richland 3, Pasco 0: Peyton Wahl had 23 digs, and Alisha Bettinson had 15 digs and eight kills to help the Bombers sweep the Bulldogs at home. Richland’s Sarah McCormick was elbowed in the head in the second set, and Rachel Connolly came in as the setter in the third.

“She did a wonderful job for us,” Richland coach Bob Raidl said. “She was kind of the spark off the bench.”

Meaghan Phalen was 8-of-10 serving with two aces, four kills and six blocks to lead the Bears.
