Volleyball: Kennewick holds off Southridge in five-set thriller

The Kennewick Lions held off a furious charge by Southridge to end the first half of Mid-Columbia Conference play with a victory.

The Lions defeated the visiting Suns 25-16, 25-13, 22-25, 15-25, 15-12.

“We came out strong from the beginning and didn’t give up at the end,” Kennewick coach Julie Maciboba said. “It was a really big win. The girls played really well. We dug well, and blocked well.”

Carlee Rhodes had 13 kills and 19 digs and Maddie Zinsli had 39 assists and 13 digs to lead the Lions.

Kylie Fraga had 46 assists, 18 digs and nine blocks to lead the Suns, despite playing with the flu.

“We had a great start in the fifth set,” Southridge coach John Lengphounpraseut said. “We made some unforced errors and let Kennewick get back in it.”

With the loss, Southridge ends the first half of the season in a three-way tie with Richland and Kamiakin for second place. Chiawana moves into first place by itself. Kennewick is in fifth, just a game back of second.

Chiawana 3, Pasco 0: Chiawana is sitting all alone at the top of the MCC volleyball standings after beating Pasco on the road.

“This was our first time over in that gym,” Chiawana coach Jim Steach said. “There was a good-spirited crowd on both sides. There were times they frustrated us. They did a nice job defensively.”

Jaymee Steach handed out 28 assists and had eight kills for the Riverhawks, while Shantelle Hill added nine kills and Madison Powers seven kills. It was just the second time the two teams have met. The series is tied at 1-all.

Sierra Linke’s 12 kills, 12 digs, three blocks, 10-of-11 serving and two aces led the Bulldogs in the loss.

Richland 3, Walla Walla 0: Sarah McCormick’s 11 assists, two aces and six digs led the Bombers to a Mid-Columbia road sweep.

Brittany Moore added five kills, four digs and three aces for Richland, which finishes the first half of conference play in a three-way tie for second place.

Kamiakin 3, Hanford 1: Amanda Miller led both sides with 20 kills and added 15 digs to lift the Braves to an MCC win over the Falcons in four games.

Kamiakin got off to a 10-0 lead in the second set after Jessica Edminster delivered 10 consecutive points from the service line.

Grandview 3, Wapato 0: Payton Parrish had nine kills and 10 assists, and Taylor Hall added 10 kills as Grandview opened its CWAC schedule with a home win over Wapato.

Columbia (Burbank) 3, Warden 1: Natalie Aguilar led a strong effort with 17 digs and 16 kills for the Coyotes in an SCAC East win over Warden. Iris Rodriguez had 12 kills and 25 digs to lead the Cougars in the loss.

Kylie Booker added 10-of-11 serving with two aces, a dig, five kills and a block for Connell.

Melissa Alvarez was 6-of-6 serving with two kills and two blocks for the Bears.

Wallace was 17-of-17 serving with three aces in the victory.
