Carl Richter, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Richter of Kennewick, was aboard the destroyer U.S.S. Woodbury when it was wrecked on the southern California coast.

He spent 16 hours in a life raft clad in his night clothes until he was rescued by a fishing boat and later returned to San Diego. None of the destroyer's crew was lost.
