PULLMAN, Wash. -- Leftovers from Saturday's college football game in Pullman, in which Washington State University held off Eastern Washington University 24-20:
I never thought I'd see a 60-yard field goal in person, but I did when Washington State's Andrew Furney connected on the line drive right as the first half expired.
"Time definitely slowed down a bit," said Furney after the game. "I took a peek at it, and it was down the center. I thought, 'Oh my God. It's actually going in.'"
* Kalaf Pole's block of Eastern kicker's Jimmy Pavel's extra-point kick was definitely a key play in the game. With 2:17 to play, that kept the WSU lead at four points at 24-20.
But I think a bigger play may have been earlier in that series, when WSU defensive back Deone Bucannon hit an unprotected Eagles wide receiver Greg Herd coming across the middle.
Herd was down for a long time before being helped to the sidelines. Bucannon was given a 15-yard personal foul penalty, but the damage was done.
Herd never came back into the game, leaving the Eagles without one of their best playmakers.
"When you see him get hit and you see him go down, that's hard," said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin. "You just have got to stay within yourself and control what you can control, and move on to the next play."
* WSU head coach Mike Leach is expecting better play out of his offensive line, which committed too many holding penalties on the day.
"Our offensive line has got to be tougher people," said Leach. "Right now, they're too quick to feel sorry for themselves."
Don't know what they did on Sunday, but Leach said his linemen were going to remember that workout when they were older men.
* Leach is never going to let anyone know the injury status of his players. Someone asked him after the game on quarterback Jeff Tuel's status. The starter left the game in the second half and had ice on his knee.
"We don't have injuries around here," said Leach. "If anything, he can run a 4.5 (40-yard dash) instead of 4.7."
* The new press box facility and suites are quite impressive. There's plenty of room and many more bathrooms.
The old pressbox had just two single-person bathrooms, one at each end of the building.
The glass is also angled so that when the student body roars, the sound bounces down on the field. Photographers said it was much louder on the field than it ever has been.
