MESA, Wash. -- A two-car crash Thursday afternoon near Mesa on Highway 395 sent an Othello man to the hospital and led to a vehicle fire that closed the northbound lanes for about an hour, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Giovanni Mondragon, 22, of Othello, was driving his 2008 Scion north about 1:45 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup driven by Hugo Galvezbarreuta, 48 of Hermiston and struck the side of the pickup.

Both cars were in the left lane when Mondragon attempted to pass on the right, WSP reported.

Mondragon was taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center and was listed in serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Galvezbarreuta was not injured.

Traffic was detoured for about an hour until the vehicle fire was contained.

Mondragon was cited for unsafe passing and negligent driving, the WSP reported.
