Cal-Berkeley's Ban tops UNLV's Jonson at PNGA Am

— San Jose's Shotaro Ban defeated Bainbridge Island's Carl Jonson of 5 and 4 in the final round of the 111th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Golf Championship on Saturday at Wine Valley Golf Club.

The 36-hole match was delayed for 70 minutes because of thunderstorms..

Ban, a University of California-Berkeley sophomore, won six of the first eight and eagled on the 625-yard par-5 hole. He maintaained pace on the second 9 and was up 8 after 13 holes.

Jonson, a UNLV sophomore, didn't stump Ban until he birdied the par-3 14th hole. He then birdied four of the next seven.

Ban's lead was only 2 up when the pair reached the 390-yard par-4 No. 22 hole, but he birdied it, eagled the par-5 No. 25 and took a 4-stroke lead after Jonson 3-putted the 27th.

On the par-3 32nd hole, both players hit the green in regulation. Ban two-putted from 15 feet for par to halve the hole and close the match 5 and 4.

Rosauers Open

PGA pro David Phay of Whidbey G&CC backed up his first round 62 with 64 strokes on Saturday to take the lead with 16-under par 126 at the 25th Rosauers Open Invitational at Indian Canyon GC.

Lynnwood's Ryan Benzel also shot a 64 to trail the Whidbey by three strokes (129) while Spokane's Corey Prugh (64-66) and Kalispell's Ryan Porch (65-65) are tied for third at 130.

Canyon Lakes' Michael Combs has a two-round total 10 under par 132 (69-63) and enters today's final round in a 2-way tie at eighth place.

The final round begins 7 a.m. today.

Banner Bank tournament

Richland's Drew McCullough and Taylor Kain-Godoy were the medalists in the Ages 15-17 divisions at the Banner Bank Junior Invite held Friday and Saturday at Walla Walla Country Club.

McCullough shot a two-round total of 148 (73-75) on the boys' 6,476-yard course and Kain-Godoy improved her first round 75 with 74 to finish with 149 on the girls' 5,367-yard course.

And Walla Walla's Emily Baumgart took medalist in the girls' Age 12-14 division (5,367 yds) with 165 strokes (82-83).
