The Kamiakin Braves finished second among the state’s Class 3A schools in the Tacoma News Tribune’s 24th annual All-Sports Championship.

Kamiakin, which won the Class 3A title last year, earned state championships in baseball, softball and girls track and field.

Seattle Prep, which finished four points behind Kamiakin last year, won the crown with 301 points thanks to a title in girls soccer and runner-up finishes in boys cross country, basketball and tennis. Kamiakin had 2841⁄2 points, well ahead of third-place Mercer Island (236).

“It has been a great run,” Don Schumacher said Mon-day, his first day of retirement after serving 12 years as the athletic director at Kamiakin and 33 years there overall. “It’s just one of those things that’s enjoyable. It’s a great place to work in any situation, but when you have success like that ... it’s so many people doing the right thing — coaches, kids, administrators, support staff.”

Hanford finished sixth with 168 points. No other area 3A team was in the top 25.

Richland finished 10th among Class 4A schools with 154.8 points. Bellarmine Prep topped the field with 287.3 points.

Waitsburg-Prescott led the Class 2B field with 223.3 points, thanks to titles in football and boys soccer, and a second-place finish in wrestling. DeSales was seventh.

Interlake won the 2A title, Colville the 1A (Connell was 14th) and Almira/Coulee-Hartline the 1B (Sunnyside Christian was 10th).

Scoring is based on team finishes. The most weight is given to volleyball, football, basketball, track and field, baseball, softball and soccer (50 points for first down to 10 for ninth through 16th); then cross country, boys wrestling, tennis and golf (40 points for first to eight for ninth-16th); and bowling and girls wrestling (14 for first down to two for ninth-16th).
