Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow announced Tuesday in a news release that outfielder Travis Buck, 28, has been reinstated from the 15-day disabled list and designated for assignment.

The Astros have 10 days to make a decision on Buck's contract. The Richland High School grad, who had been on a rehab assignment with Double A Corpus Christi while recovering from tendinitis in his right achilles, appeared in 33 games for the Astros this season prior to going on the DL on May 29.

The left-handed hitter batted .216 in 81 plate appearances in 2012. He has a .243 career batting average, having played in at least 14 big-league games in each of the past five seasons.

Dan Mennella of MLBTradeRumors.com pointed out that Buck's best season came when the Arizona State product was a rookie with Oakland in 2007. He recorded a .288 batting average, an on-base average of .377 and a slugging percentage of .474.

He's been plagued by injuries since then. Last season, he played for the Cleveland Indians. He appeared in 50 games and batted .228 in 149 at bats for the Tribe, which included two home runs and 18 RBI.
