EUGENE, Ore. -- University of Washington junior Shaniae Lakes, a 2009 graduate of Richland High, will compete today at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene.
Lakes will compete in the triple jump qualifying round at 3:20 p.m. at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
It is the same site where she set the school record in the triple jump at the Pac-12 championships May 13, when she jumped 43 feet, 31/4 inches to shatter the old school record of 41-7 3/4.
She advanced to the NCAA West Preliminaries, but failed to advance to the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships.
Lakes is the ninth jumper in the first flight. There are two flights of 10 athletes each. The top 12 advance to the finals Monday. The top three from Monday's competition will represent the U.S. at the London Olympic Games.
