Mid-Columbia pro baseball update from April

I finally got some time to track down how our area's professional baseball players did to start the season out in April.

Here's a day-by-day look and what the local guys did during April:

April

5 — Drew Heid (Walla Walla CC) goes 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored as Inland Empire (Angels) defeated Rancho Cucamonga (Dodgers) 6-5 in the Class A California League.

5 — Darrell Ceciliani (CBC) goes 1-for-5 and steals two bases in a 3-2 loss for the St. Lucie Mets against the Bradenton Marauders (Pirates) in the Florida State League.

6 — Travis Buck (Richland) hits a pinch-hit double for the Houston Astros in a 5-3 loss to Colorado.

8 — Shawn O’Malley (Southridge) hits a solo homer and adds a sacrifice fly to help lead the Durham Bulls (Rays) over the Gwinnett Braves (Braves) 7-4 in the Triple-A International League.

9 — Buck goes 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs as the Astros roll over the Atlanta Braves 8-3.

9 — Ceciliani has a monster game for St. Lucie, going for 4-for-5 with a home run and triple, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in a 6-5 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (Rays) in the FSL.

11 — Steve Ames (CBC) tosses the final inning of shutout ball — giving up one hit and striking out one — as the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers) beat the Jacksonville Suns (Marlins) 10-5 in the AA Southern League.

11 — Heid hits a solo home run as Inland Empire beats Lake Elsinore (Padres) 4-2 in the Cal League.

11 — Ceciliani is placed on the DL at St. Lucie with a hamstring strain.

14 — Heid goes 2-for-3 with an RBI as host Inland Empire (Angels) beat High Desert (Mariners) 6-5 in the California League. Heid also starts a double play from his left field position, making a catch and then throwing the runner out trying to get back to first.

15 — Jason Repko (Hanford) played in just four games for Triple-A Pawtucket (Red Sox) when he was called up to the big club.

15 — Kyle Conley (Richland) is activated from the injured list and hits a solo home run for the Palm Beach Cardinals in a 10-1 loss to Bradenton (Pirates) in the Florida State League.

16 — Buck goes 2-for-4 with a run scored, but the Astros lose to the Washington Nationals 6-3.

17 — Heid goes 1-for-5 with a stolen base, but Inland Empire falls 3-2 to the Modesto Nuts (Rockies).

17 — Travis Mattair (Southridge), picked up in the winter by the Cincinnati Reds through the Rule V Draft, went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the Bakersfield Blaze’s 8-5 Calfornia League win over Visalia (Diamondbacks).

18 — Starter Jorge Reyes (Warden) took the loss, but pitched well for Tucson (Padres) in a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Rockies) in Pacific Coast League play. Reyes scattered nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, but only gave up the two earned runs.

20 — O’Malley goes goes 1-for-4, driving in a run with a single and another with a sacrfice fly. But Durham (Rays) loses to Pawtucket (Red Sox) 15-10 in International League play.

21 — Repko (seperated shoulder) is placed on the disabled list by the Red Sox.

21 — St. Lucie activates Ceciliani from the DL.

21 — The Cardinals send Conley to Springfield of the Double-A Texas League.

22 — Ceciliani goes 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored as St. Lucie (Mets) beat the Fort Myers Miracle (Twins) 9-8.

23 — Ceciliani is put back on the DL by St. Lucie.

23 — Heid goes 1-for-3, but Inland Empire gets routed by Lake Elsinore (Padres) 8-1 in the Cal League.

23 — O’Malley goes 1-for-3, but Durham loses to Pawtucket (Red Sox) 7-1 in International League play.

24 — Eric O’Flaherty (Walla Walla) picked up the victory in relief for Atlanta in a 4-3 win at Los Angeles. O’Flaherty walked one and surrendered no runs or hits in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

24 — Nyjer Morgan (Walla Walla CC) goes 3-for-5 and steals a base to lead Milwaukee over visiting Houston 9-6.

25 — Buck hits a pinch-hit single in the ninth as the visiting Astros beat the Brewers 7-5.

26 — Conley goes 1-for-4 with a double, but Springfield (Cardinals) loses to Northwest Arkansas (Royals) 6-3 in the Double-A Texas League.

28 — Jorge Reyes (Warden) picks up his first victory of the season as visiting Tucson (Padres) beats Sacramento (Athletics) 6-4. Reyes goes five innings, scattering seven hits and striking out three.

29 — Ames tosses an inning of scoreless relief, walking one and striking out one, as Chattanooga pounds Mobile (Diamondbacks) 8-2 in the Southern League.

29 — Conley goes 2-for-4 with a solo home run, but Springfield drops another game, losing to Tulsa (Rockies) 3-2.

29 — Heid goes 1-for-4 with a double as Inland Empire beats High Desert 3-0 in the California League.

30 — O’Malley scores the game’s only run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Durham a 1-0 win over visiting Indianapolis (Pirates) in International League play. O’Malley was 1-for-3 and walked once.
