Hanford's Collett wins hurdles title

TACOMA -- Joe Collett thought he had lost.

The reaction of the other runners surrounding Timberline's Rashon Smith after the Class 3A 110-meter hurdles Friday left Collett thinking second would just have to do.

After a bit of a delay, though, the Hanford senior found out from his coaches yelling from the grandstands that he had indeed won.

Collett capped his magnificent senior season with a state hurdles title at Star Track XXX at Mt. Tahoma High School.

"This is the most work I've ever put into a track or cross country season," Collett said. "Just happy it all paid off."

It nearly didn't pay off, as Collett and Smith were shoulder to shoulder throughout the race. Collett pulled ahead for a stretch, but a furious rally by Smith and a lean at the line appeared to have sent the Timberline runner home a champion.

"I thought he outleaned me," Collett said. "I could tell we were neck and neck. Even afterward, we were all talking and it was the best race of the season. I was really happy to get first. It's a great day."

Collett won in a time of 14.55 seconds, while Smith finished in 14.58.

Collett, who is going to BYU, didn't have his best time of the season, but he wasn't complaining after earning the title. He will compete in the 300 hurdles and 400 meters today.

"I prepared good enough," he said. "I was in the zone. That was the best I could do, and I had to be happy with what ever happened."

While Collett won by the narrowest margins, Chiawana's Sadie Sparks lost by a sliver.

The defending champion in the Class 4A 100 hurdles took second in a time of 15.04 seconds. Auburn Riverside's Rachel O'Neil won the title in 15.02.

"It was bad on my part to not kick in until the last hurdle," Sparks said. "I should've done it the whole race."

Sparks clipped a hurdle but still was in the hunt to defend her title. She made a late charge and was just outleaned at the finish line.

"I saw the race was about to end and had to pick up," Sparks said. "I just didn't have enough time."

Sparks will compete in the 300 hurdles and the high jump today.

"I'm disappointed," she said. "Getting it last year and not getting it my senior year is disappointing."

Kamiakin's Khadidja Toure came up short in the Class 3A 100 hurdles, finishing third in 15.61. Holy Names' Cecelia Jackson won the title in 14.64.

The finish does put the Braves in second in the team race with 16 points. Juanita leads at 20 points. Kamiakin has an athlete or relay in nearly every event today.

Notes: Richland's Chelsea McClammer won the mixed 800-meter wheelchair race in a time of 2:33.99. She was second in the combined 400 meters in 1:11.22. ... Bellingham's girls 4x200 relay set a meet record in the preliminaries, finishing in 48.29.
