Boxing club stages weekend tournament in Richland

RICHLAND -- Contenders Boxing Club will play host to the Junior Olympics district boxing tournament Saturday and Sunday at the M Hotel on George Washington Way in Richland.

The Tri-Cities will have 12 area pugilists practicing the sweet science in the USA Boxing sanctioned outdoor event. Matches are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and entrance fee is $10 at the door.

Taking a shot at the Junior Olympics Regional Tournament scheduled May 26-27 in Tacoma will be Contenders Boxing Club bantamweight Kassandra Crandall, 16; light welterweight Henry Ayala, 15; and light flyweight Alexander Mendoza, 13.

And from R.C. Boxing Club, sparring will be light flyweights Eibar Chavez, 12, and 10-year-old light flyweights Damien Del-Angel and Faustino Romero, Jr.

Although the Olympic qualifying bouts are limited to ages 16-and-under, the action will be rounded out with other fights.

"We match 'em up and they go out there and fight and get a nice trophy," said Tony Valdez of Contenders Boxing Club.

Also stepping into the ring from Contenders Boxing Club will be light heavyweights, Josh Hayden, 27, and Tony Solis, 24 and featherweight Brandy Roberts, 22 as well as R.C. Boxing Club light heavyweight Rey Vazquez, 19, and 18-year-olds Luis Alvarado (lightweight) and Eric Limon (middleweight).
