COLLECTION: Hazardous waste disposal is Saturday

By the Tri-City Herald April 26, 2012

KENNEWICK -- A household hazardous waste collection event will be Friday and Saturday for all residents of Benton County and its cities at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Kennewick.

Residents can drop off free of charge paints, cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, motor oils, batteries and fluorescent lights.

The collection center in the fairgrounds parking lot just off 10th Avenue will be open at 9 a.m. each day, closing at 3 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday, or until the site reaches full capacity.

Unacceptable items are explosives, asbestos, biohazards, dynamite, ammunitions and tires.

The collection event is for household waste only. No businesses or contractors will be allowed to drop off materials.

Benton County Solid Waste and the cities of Kennewick Benton City, Prosser, Richland and West Richland are sponsoring the event, which is being paid for through a grant from the state Department of Ecology.

All household hazardous waste received at the drop-off site will be hauled by a commercial environmental waste hauler to a certified waste disposal site.
