YAKIMA -- Yakima police call a shooting Sunday that sent a wounded 29-year-old man stumbling into a convenience store for help gang-related.

The man, who was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to his back, told police he was walking in the 700 block of D Street when he was approached by several men dressed in black and one began firing shots at him, according to a Yakima police news release.

The man fled to the nearby Eighth Street Market & Deli, where he asked for help, the release said.

Store clerk Erica Rogers said she heard the shots before the man stumbled into the store.

"I heard a loud noise and then a customer said get down," she said, looking over at an area adjacent to the store. "Then a guy come over and said 'I'm shot.' "

"I called the police," she said.

Police responded to the call about 12:30 p.m., and the man was taken to a local hospital. His wounds did not appear to be life-threatening, the release said.

About a half-dozen police cars lined Eighth and D streets near where the shooting took place and police investigated a taped off area near and alley between two houses.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department at 509-575-6200.
